To get the most out of the Animal Feeding activity at the Zoo, we suggest studying the following aspects at school before the visit:
To understand the students’ interests and increase motivation about the animals:
- Make a mural in class where you write down things that the children want to know about what the animals eat.
- Put a box in the classroom where students can place the questions they may have at any time and later study them.
- Collect photos, magazine articles, cards, files or other materials about feeding the animals that the children can obtain.
- Bring in videos, CDs or other materials on electronic supports about this subject.
To observe animals:
- Take an outing to find pinecones gnawed at by chipmunks and mice and other remains, such as pecked or bitten fruits coming from some animal feeding on them.
- Ask students who have a pet and vertebrate to prepare, individually or in groups, an explanation about its feeding to present to their classmates with the help of photographs or the animal itself.
- Visit a pet food shop and do a project.
As specific objectives:
- Introduce the concept of animal food and learn to identify the different types.
- Match mouths, teeth and other parts of the body related to feeding and the type of food.
- Knowledge of the existence of vertebrates that are herbivores, frugivores, filter feeders, insectivores, piscivores, carnivores and omnivores.
