To get the most out of The Invertebrates Workshop at the Zoo, we suggest studying the following aspects at school before the visit:

To understand the students’ interests and increase motivation about the animals:

  • Collect questions that the students ask about invertebrates to work with later. Collect news articles about damages caused by the African lobster and other invertebrates.
  • Bring in videos, CDs or other materials on electronic supports about these issues.
  • Start a collection of invertebrates in the classroom, to which all students can bring in animals and classify them, starting with the phyla that are most studied at the Zoo: arthropods, molluscs and echinoderms.

To observe animals:

  • Take an outing to the beach, the countryside or forest to discover the great diversity of invertebrates that you can find.
  • Look at home and on the schoolyard for invertebrates that students can later classify with the help of a book, and those that have the most interesting traits.
  • Build an ant house with a glass viewing panel.

As specific objectives:

  • Understand the large proportion of animals that are invertebrates compared to vertebrates.
  • Introduce the classification of living beings.
  • Study the most important characteristics of the different phyla.
