The Vertebrates Workshop teaches students about the main characteristics of vertebrates, with teaching adapted to their age.
It starts with a short introduction in the classroom where they are shown representatives of the main types of vertebrates on slides and with other audiovisuals. Furthermore, the images reveal aspects that cannot be directly observed at the Zoo.
Then the students look at and handle different materials coming from animals in our collection.
When leaving the classroom, the students are given a guided tour by a Zoo educator (biologist) around the grounds in order to learn more about the following contents:
- Introduction to the classification of vertebrates by observing their similarities and differences.
- Comparison of the different types of movement and types of limbs depending on the medium in which they move.
- Observation of the different types of mouths, teeth, beaks and paws or legs, according to what they eat.
- Differentiating characteristics of each class of vertebrate.
- Study of vertebrate reproduction types: oviparity, ovoviviparity and viviparity.
- Identification and modifications in skin protection in each class.
- Sensory organs most used by each class of vertebrates.
