The Birds Workshop

To get the most out of The Birds Workshop, we suggest studying the following aspects at school before the visit:

To understand the students’ interests and increase motivation about the animals:

• Make a list where you write down and/or draw the things that the children want to know about birds.
• Put a box in the classroom where students can place the questions they may have at any time and later study them.
• Collect photographs, magazine articles, cards, worksheets and other materials about the heron.
• Bring in videos, CDs or other materials on electronic supports about these animals.

To observe animals:

• Visit the marshes in Empordà, the delta of Llobregat or the delta of Ebro (equipped with binoculars) and then visit the Barcelona Zoo to watch the same birds and their nests from closer up.
• Take a trip to the forest to listen to the songs of different birds and start a collection of things related to birds: feathers or abandoned nests.
• Ask students who have a pet bird to prepare, individually or in groups, an explanation about this animal to present to their classmates with the help of photographs or the animal itself.
• Make and hang bird feeders and baths to attract birds to the schoolyard or their homes.
• Visit the animal files on the website for the Barcelona Zoo.

As specific objectives:

• Status of birds within the class of vertebrates.
• Identification of the most common species surrounding us.
• Knowledge of the existence of aquatic and land, flying and flightless birds.
