Description

The addra gazelle is a rare subspecies of the Dama gazelle that lived in the sub-desert regions of southern Morocco and the western Sahara.
Almost extinct in the wild until the end of the 60s, the Experimental Station of Arid Regions of Almeria, a centre for recovering Saharan fauna that reports to the CSIC (Spanish Higher Council of Scientific Research), started a captive breeding programme for this animal in 1971 to prevent their total extinction.
The programme started with one male and six females from a private collection. It has been so successful that in recent years specimens have been released into some African national parks, as well as sending numerous animals to different zoos around the world, including the Barcelona Zoo, which participates in the European Captive Breeding Programme (EEP) for this species.
