Description

The spotted deer is a medium-sized deer, weighing some 75 kg, with brown colouring broken up by white spots. Unlike most cervids that only have these spots when young, the spotted deer remains spotted throughout its life.
This species of Asian origin inhabits the forested regions of India, Bangladesh and Nepal to the geographic barrier of the Himalayas. In addition to its natural area of distribution, they can also be found in some regions of Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and Hawaii, where they were introduced by man.
Their basic diet is grass, although they can also eat leaves and fruits.
They tend to live in small groups, sometimes mixed with other species like the black antelope and the gaur. During monsoon season, they can even come together into quite large herds.
The cycle of when the antlers grow and are shed and the mating season do not have fixed dates, varying significantly from one region to another and even between individuals, so that fawns and males without antlers can be found any time of the year.
