Description

The Java sparrow is from the archipelago of Indonesia, specifically the islands of Bali, Java and Madura. It has been introduced to many countries, partly due to its popularity as a cage bird.
They are characterised by their grey colouring on the back and breast, a pink underbelly, black head with white cheeks, a red ring around the eyes and a red beak.
They are endemic to the wooded areas around crops, particularly favouring rice plantations, which are omnipresent in a huge region from Java to Bali and provide the majority of their food. However, the species can also eat a wide range of seeds from different plants, as well as insects.
The species is rated as vulnerable at this time, threatened by exploitation as pets, loss of habitat and also seemingly the use of pesticides on crops.
