Description

Unmistakable due to their cap of reddish fur, they live in the dense rainforests of East Africa, from southern Senegal to Gabon. They form groups that can end up being quite large, with the females at the core and a strict hierarchy between the mothers and their offspring. Young males tend to wander far from the family home range after reaching maturity.
They basically feed on fruit and vegetables, complemented by seeds, insects, eggs and small vertebrates. Like other mangabeys, they have large and strong incisors that let them eat fruits and seeds with hard shells that their fellow monkeys are unable to crack open. Animals with a wide range of vocalisations, they can emit loud calls that can be heard from far away.
This species is endangered due to the fast deforestation of their jungle habitat.
