Description
The origin of the domestic sheep was the mouflon, domesticated in Asia Minor between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago. They accompanied man on migratory journeys and are present throughout the world today. There are 17 Iberian races, with the Merina, Ripollesa and Latxa meriting mention. Some races are appreciated for their wool, such as the Wallachian, which is used to make astrakhan (the loosely curled fur of pelts of very young lambs), although their meat, milk and by-products are also used. Males are called rams and the babies are lambs.
