Description

A member of the Anguidae family, encompassing a large variety of body shapes, from animals that have completely lost their limbs, some with shorter tails and others with bodies that resemble those of snakes, to animals that have conserved their limbs, which are short but strong, which is the case of the Haitian giant halliwasp.
They live under fallen leaves in tropical and subtropical rainforests in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. These opportunistic predators eat insects, earthworms, small mammals and reptiles.
They are in serious danger of extinction today due to the degradation of their habitat by deforestation and increased agricultural activities (crops and livestock). They are also threatened by invasive species like cats and mongooses that hunt them and by persecution by local inhabitants that wrongly think that they are poisonous.
