Description
This boa is endemic to Cuba, only living on this large Caribbean island. It is also the largest snake on the entire island. Its natural habitat is the tropical rainforest that used to cover a large part of Cuba, now surviving only in the small remaining well-conserved jungle areas, situated primarily on the easternmost end of the island.
Both ground and tree-dwellers, they mainly feed on small mammals, birds and lizards, which they kill by constriction. They frequent caves in some regions, specialists at capturing bats. They tend to hide among the undergrowth during the day, or in holes or under fallen trees, normally not far from water, and are active at dusk and night.
This species is in serious danger of extinction mainly because of the destruction of its habitat.
The Barcelona Zoo participates in the EEP (European Captive Breeding Programme) for this species.
