Shrubs

Shrubs, unlike trees, do not have a trunk.  They branch out from their base, at ground level. They are a species that is adapted to hard climates and geologies. They are not very tall and often form part of the bottom layer in woods.

The fact that they live under trees has resulted in them being able to live with little light. Shrubs are very characteristic of dry climates with spells of very hot weather.  They have developed mechanisms to enable them to make the most of the small quantity of water they get. Species of shrubs can also be found in deserts where they have adapted to living in these hard climatic conditions.  For example, they have developed smaller leaves and dark colours so as not to reflect the light from the sun, and to avoid getting hot and losing water. As with trees, there are deciduous shrubs (that lose their leaves in the winter), such as the European Barberry and the Guelder Rose, and evergreen shrubs (that never lose their leaves), such as the Strawberry Tree and the Laurel.

A large variety of bushes can be found in the zoo. Select one from the right hand menu or the menu at the bottom of the screen and you will be able to learn more in greater depth.
