Description

The Chiloe wigeon is a robust duck that inhabits the southernmost area of South America: southern Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. The plumage on its back is dark, the chest is striated, the sides are orange-brown, the belly is white and the tail is black. The head is a dark metallic green with white cheeks and forehead.
Their preferred habitats are lakes, lagoons and the shores of slow-moving rivers with grassy meadows and scattered trees surrounding them. They are primarily herbivores, mainly eating grass, tender shoots, seeds and the softest bits of aquatic plants.
They make their nests on the ground among the vegetation at the edges of bodies of water. Females lay between 5 and 8 eggs and the incubation period lasts a little less than one month.
This species is still common in many wetlands of their extensive area of distribution.
