Description

The Green-cheeked Amazon is characterised by the general green plumage of its body and the yellow forehead. It has a white ring around its eyes and a yellow beak and irises.
Their habitat is restricted to a limited region in northeast Mexico in the provinces of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz. They occupy tropical jungles, gallery forests in more open regions and the deciduous forests that grow on river banks and at the feet of mountains.
Gregarious, they can form flocks of up to one-hundred individuals.  They feed on seeds, nuts, fruits, flowers, berries and different types of plant matter that they find high in the treetops.
Given their small area of distribution, this species is in serious danger of extinction due to deforestation of their habitat and capturing for the pet trade.
The Barcelona Zoo participates in the European Captive Breeding Programme (EEP) for this endangered species.
