Description

The Smooth-sided toad, which can be up to 20-cm long, is one of the largest species of its genus. Its skin is very smooth for a toad, as this species normally has rough skin. It is a light-brown colour with a series of dark patches on the entire body.
It inhabits bodies of water in tropical jungles, including rivers, streams, lagoons, swamps and marshes.
They are carnivores, eating all types of invertebrates and also small vertebrates.
They are particularly active at night. Like almost all toads, they have a characteristic defensive behaviour consisting of inflating their bodies to a considerably larger size to try to intimidate possible predators. Their parotid glands also secrete an irritating toxic substance.
Their populations are threatened in many parts of their area of distribution due to the degradation and pollution of their habitat.
