Framework Research Programmes

The Framework Research Programmes form part of a zoo's core purpose. They have an obligation to carry out research to provide, as part of their basic functioning, knowledge that contributes to conserving biodiversity on the planet.

These programmes are carried out within the Zoo’s facilities, and involves using materials or animals from its collection. They are long term and cover a broad range of research fields and structural types. They are normally done in collaboration with other institutions such as universities. They are of primary importance for managing the Zoo’s collection. And, because of the breadth of the programme, they represent a frame of reference which can be used as a basis for more specific research work.

Barcelona Zoo has a wide range of framework research programmes, focused on matters that are core to its functions and closely linked to the zoo’s animal collection as well as its operational and management activities.
