Grants Awarded in Previous years
In its efforts to promote research as a tool to contribute to animal conservation, protection and welfare, Barcelona Zoo has awarded PRIC grants in recent years to a number of specific research projects. Here are some of the research projects that have been made possible thanks to these grants:
In 2010
- Biodiversity and space/time structure of diptera in Collserola Park, Barcelona. Preliminary approach to the Hymenoptera order.
- Population identity and feeding ecology of the northern Iberian Mediterranean striped dolphin.
- Socialising groups of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) of the Lwiro Primate Rehabilitation Centre as a step towards its reintroduction into Kahuzi-Biega National Park, in east Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Pilot project to reintroduce chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) into the reserve in the area west of the Freetown Peninsula in Sierra Leone and the conservation of its natural habitat.
- Study of cetacean populations in the Mediterranean Barcelona/Balearic Islands strip.
- Current distribution and genetic variability in the Pyrenean frog (Rana pyrenaica), an endangered Iberian endemism.
- Consolidation of a process of research and institutional cohesion for the conservation of the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) in the Costa Rican Caribbean.
- Impact of the bycatch of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in and around the Ebro Delta on nesting populations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
- Assessment of the problem of hunting on Pico Basilé and plan for their sustainable management and ongoing monitoring.
In 2009
- Sounds of the sea: Listening to the ocean depths. Study into the effects of the noise from human activities on marine ecosystems.
- New technologies for the rapid detection and study of jellyfish blooms in the Mediterranean.
- Preliminary study on the biodiversity of Diptera in Barcelona’s Collserola Park.
- Study of the distribution and habitat use of the West Indian manatee population in Tortuguero National Park (Costa Rica).
- Identification of critical conservation areas for the loggerhead turtle in the Ebro Delta.
- Study into aspects of biology and behaviour of the Mediterranean monk seal, needed for the conservation of the species.
- Project to conserve the lesser grey shrike.
