New technologies for the rapid detection and study of jellyfish blooms in the Mediterranean

Main researcher: Dacha Atienza (Institute of Sea Sciences (ICM), Mediterranean Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CMIMA) and Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC)).

Description: This project aims to test an innovative methodology for evaluating and studying jellyfish blooms on the north-western coasts of the Mediterranean Sea - both coastal and in open water.

During its execution, it is planned to test the effectiveness of using cameras installed on airplanes in order to identify and quantify swarms of jellyfish. The initial results will enable these cameras to be installed as useful and accessible tools for the early detection of jellyfish blooms and for implementing management procedures in bathing areas.
