Preliminary study on the biodiversity of Diptera (Insecta) in Collserola Park in Barcelona

biodiversity of Dipterabiodiversity of Diptera

Lead researcher: Jorge Luís Mederos López.

Description:

The inventory and monitoring of an area are always established as primary and basic steps on which to base any strategy for managing the areas in which it is intended to implement plans for protection and promotion of its natural and cultural values. These studies also allow an understanding of the dynamic nature and state of preservation and deterioration of the system, providing benchmarks for comparison with other environments and data useful for action in a situation of deterioration and loss of biodiversity.

As a preliminary step to developing a long-term study, this project aims to discover the phenology of different families and species of Diptera in different strata of the forest. In particular, it seeks to determine specifically the Diptera families, as well as, at a level of order and family, those groups that are crucial for the functioning of the ecosystem. It also seeks to understand the biodiversity and the presence or absence of bio-indicator species in Collserola Park.

Safe and non-destructive access to forest cover is the main precursor to almost all studies of this issue, by minimizing damage to existing trees and organisms. Invertebrates in wildlife occupy an important part of the natural diet of vertebrates in the Mediterranean area, of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, providing a food source present throughout the year.
