Goals

1
Continuous improvement of the welfare of the individuals that make up the Zoo’s collection. Through the research that is being carried out - which provides knowledge on physiology, genetics, nutrition, medicine, breeding, behaviour and other aspects of biology - the Zoo’s facilities can be adapted accordingly, thus ensuring a good quality of life for the animals living there.
2
Contribute to the conservation of the animals that inhabit the Zoo, maintaining maximum genetic variability among the captive populations to ensure their future.
3
Collaborate on research into the factors that may determine species extinction and have a negative effect on the conservation of ecosystems and natural habitats with a view to helping to correct them. Special emphasis is placed on the planet’s habitats that are outstanding for their biological diversity and richness.
4
Provide a meeting place for researchers, administration managers and conservationists, and thus facilitate their work.
5
Produce and use high-quality knowledge to assist with taking decisions relating to the management of animal collections and related programmes and projects.
6
Encourage the dissemination of scientific practice applied to fauna and conservation among visitors to the Zoo, with the aim of raising awareness and education.
7
Disseminate and share the results and conclusions from research work with the zoo/conservation sector.
8
Provide technical support (facilities, veterinary knowledge and species handling, etc) to research and conservation projects.
9
Go into more detail on the research programme in order to provide the different educational stages with a common goal.
10
Internationalise research and conservation programmes.
11
Increase specialisation of the research and conservation programmes.
12
Extend and improve the conditions of the zoo's own collection.
