BARCELONA ZOO. An ally for biodiversity. A project with a great future

BARCELONA ZOO. An ally for biodiversity. A project with a great future

For nearly 125 years, the Barcelona Zoo has been a window into nature. It has been a learning tool for families, school groups, scholars and researchers generation after generation.  The tasks of its professionals have led to the acquisition of extremely valuable knowledge on hundreds of species, work that is essential for these animals' conservation in increasingly threatened habitats. Over the course of these years, the Zoo has continued to adapt to society's needs and demands at any given time.

Within this logical evolution is the reflection process started by the Barcelona City Council at the beginning of 2016 to outline what the Zoo of the future must be like in order to continue on its path as a centre dedicated to education and conservation of fauna. Experts, social organisations and animal advocates, Zoo technicians and representatives and its employees, members of the Barcelona government team and representatives of municipal political groups are all taking part in this enriching debate that will be used to define the most suitable zoo model for our city.

Like so many cities committed to protecting animals and nature, Barcelona also wants to have a zoo that grows constantly better and more useful for environmental education and the protection of animal species. This is its main responsibility and only raison d’être.  Read here why the Zoo is an important ALLY FOR BIODIVERSITY
