This tree is spectacular in the spring, when the intense pink flowers appear clinging to the branches and the blackish trunk before the new leaves emerge. In the winter, it is covered in long fruits that stay on the tree even after the leaves have fallen. Although it is originally from the western Mediterranean, we now find it naturalised in the rest of the Mediterranean region, where it is extensively cultivated for its ornamental value.
According to the legend, it is the tree from which Judas was hanged.
