How man uses animals workshop

Activity designed for students in years one and two of primary who want to work with domestic animals and, more concretely, with farm animals.

 

During the workshop, students will learn the difference between a domestic animal and a wild animal, and relate the origin of both types of animals to discover the wild animal that domestic animals originally came from. They will also study what they are like and which parts we use from each of them and they will see the conditions under which these animals live both on a conventional farm and an industrial farm.

All of the concepts will be worked on by playing different games.

To get the most out of the How Man Uses Animals Workshop at the Zoo, we suggest that you do some work in the classroom first, both in the area of experiences and in other subjects (visual arts, body expression, oral and written expression, maths...) on these issues:

 

To arouse students’ interest and increase their motivation about the animals:

  • Make large sketches of typical animals on a farm
  • Talk about the different names that farmyard animals have for the males, females and babies
  • Imitate the sounds these animals make
  • Collect stories and songs about the farmyard animals that the students find 

 For watching the animals:

  • Try to find a chicken or duck chick that you can all watch in the classroom
  • Visit a traditional farm
  • Watch excerpts from documentaries on farmyard animals

 As specific objectives: 

  • Comprehension of the idea of farmyard animal compared to wild animal
  • Identification of farm animals’ different body parts and the functions they perform
  • Recognise the most characteristic animals on farms 
  • Match the origin of the animals from which they originated
  • Basic notions on feeding and care of farmyard animals
  • Learning which products are obtained from farmyard animals

When you reach the Education Department, the classroom group will be welcomed by a Zoo educator (biologist) who will take you and students to the Zoo Farm. We will visit the wild animals from which the domestic animals originated on this tour.

In the farm classroom, there will be a presentation of the animals’ activities.

 

All ideas will be worked on via a group game that is done at the Zoo Farm with our animals in front of them. To study their feed and diets, the children will have the opportunity to give food to some animals at the Zoo Farm. This is when there will be a short guided tour of the Farm.

 

The farmyard animals will be matched with the different products that man obtains from them, and the children will be offered different objects and/or materials that they must then place under the puzzle piece of the animal that produces them.

 

The group can stay on the Zoo grounds until the Zoo closes for the day.

Suggested activities to do after you take the How Man Uses Animals Workshop:

 

Area for discovering the natural and social environment:

  • Create data sheets on the animals you learned about
  • Make a mural of a farm, a house and the forest Collect photos of animals and group them according to the categories of farmyard animal, domestic animal and wild animal, and put them into their corresponding place on the mural. 
  • Make a mural to match the name of the sound the animal makes with its onomatopoeia  

Oral and written expression:

  • Act out stories on the animal or animals you worked on
  • Explain stories about some of the animals you’ve seen 

Visual arts:

  • Paint the animal you liked the best out of all that you’ve seen 
  • Make a face or gesture that represents an animal and/or dress up as a farmyard animal 

Bodily expression:

  • Play games imitating the characteristic sounds and movements of different farmyard animals 

Evaluation of learning:

  • Create farmyard animal files writing down the use that man makes of each one

  • Learning to carefully observe the animal or animals you studied
  • Giving suitable foods to each animal 
  • Deduce the products and foods that are obtained from each animal

  • Foster respect toward animals via better knowledge of them
