Catalana fauna Tour

This activity is aimed at secondary school pupils and pupils in the second-half of primary school, in which they are presented with the main species found in our natural environment. 
Barcelona Zoo has examples of all vertebrate fauna groups in the country - particularly those that are most under threat and for which there is a greater need for reproduction in captivity. Studying them develops an understanding of the ways in which these species adapt to our natural environment. 
Barcelona Zoo’s animal collection focuses particularly on Catalan fauna and in some cases, on species that are already extinct in Catalonia - such as wolves, grizzly bears - and others that are on the verge of disappearing such as the lesser grey shrike. It also has animals such as the red deer, fallow deer and wild goat, that are hard to observe in the wild, as well as specimens of sea otter, midwife toad, tortoise, flat beak, blue dick, lesser grey shrike and stork, which are the part of interesting reintroduction projects. 

 

When the tour ends, the group will have the opportunity of spending the rest of the day at the Zoo until closing time.

To make the most of the Zoo's Catalan Fauna activity, we suggest doing some work at school beforehand on the following aspects  

 

To gather together the pupils’ interests and increase their motivation towards animals:

  • Look for information (photos, articles from magazines, stickers, cards, videos, CDs and other electronic materials) on wild species among our fauna.
  • Look for information (photos, articles from magazines, stickers, cards, videos, CDs and other electronic materials) on urban species in towns and cities (pigeons, gulls, sparrows, blackbirds, mice, beetles etc).
  • Look for information (photos, articles from magazines, stickers, cards, videos, CDs and other electronic materials) on species among our fauna that are already extinct.
  • Make a list, in class, noting down and/or outlining what the children want to know about our fauna. It is important to include urban animals: sparrows, swallows, mice, rats, beetles, etc.
  • Set up a box in which pupils can put any questions that arise at any time and subsequently work on.

 

For observing the animals:

  • Take a trip to find traces, listen to sounds and try to see animals from the surrounding natural and urban environments.
  • Prepare and place feeders and nest-boxes to attract birds into the school playground.
  • Ask pupils who have pets to put together either individually or as a group, an explanation about this animal and present it to their classmates using pictures or the animal itself.

 

Specific objectives: 

  • The status of different fauna: very common animals, those that are common but go unnoticed, endangered species of animal. 
  • Learning about the wide variety of animals in our natural environment.

The Zoo’s Catalan Fauna activity teaches about the main characteristics of the country’s vertebrates in a way that is suitable for the pupils’ age. 
It consists of a brief introduction including a slideshow of examples of Catalan fauna. In addition, the images are a collection of aspects that are not directly observable at the Zoo. 


Observation and handling of different materials from animals in our collection. 
When they leave the classroom the pupils are given a tour by one of the Zoo’s educators (biologist) around the enclosure, during which they will learn more about the following:

  • Explanation of Catalonia’s different natural habitats.
  • Positioning Catalan fauna in the context of the whole ecosystem in the Mediterranean and Iberian Peninsula.
  • Identification of the most common local species of fauna from urban and wild habitats.
  • Learn about the most endangered species among Catalan fauna.
  • Learn about the extinct species among Catalan fauna. 
  • Measures in place to conserve Catalan fauna: protection of areas, legal protection, contribution made by zoos, reintroduction programmes, and so on.

Suggestions for activities to be carried out after the Barcelona Zoo Catalan Fauna tour: 

 

In terms of understanding the environment: 

  • Create murals with photos of animals that have been collected, grouping them according to different criteria: natural environment/urban environment; the conservation status of the species; classification according to natural habitat and so on.
  • Have pupils prepare "lectures" - either individually or as a group - to give to their classmates. 
  • Have pupils write and/or represent made-up stories about native fauna, including information they learned during the activity. 
  • Create a book or album about animals, in which they collect all the content they have been working on. 
  • Map out the distribution of Catalan species on maps of Europe and Africa.

 

Evaluation of learnings:

  • Looking at a photograph of an animal, the pupils have to say whether the species is native or not, what type of animal it is, the environment in which it is active, how it feeds, how it reproduces, and its conservation status.

The Zoo’s Catalan Fauna activity is aimed at 3rd and 4th year primary school pupils.

For groups of disabled and residences with economic difficulties the price are 7 € per person and the accompanying free.
